Strange Occurrences

Strange Ghost Occurrences

The hauntings began on night in September 1963. A groundskeeper was doing some work at a local residency located close to Crowley Hall. He had been busy working when he heard what sounded like a piercing scream coming from the Hall. Dropping his tools and running towards the hall he once again heard a scream. Coming closer towards the hall he called out asking if anyone needed help. Once again a scream came from within the hall so he forced open a barricaded door and went inside. As he was walking along a corridor he heard the scream coming from one of the rooms to his left. He ran towards the door pushed it open and went inside but nobody was there. The groundskeeper, frightened, backed out of the room and ran out of the door. As he left the building behind him the last thing he heard was a scream coming from Crowley Hall.

In March 1971, a nurse was putting the children to bed in the first-floor nursery when she heard heavy footsteps coming from a room directly above. It was an empty room and never used by the hospital. At first the nurse thought nothing of it as there were workmen in the building at the time. But these sounds went on night after night, and getting louder and louder. Other hospital staff had heard these sounds also, but when they went into the room to check-up on the noise, there was nobody there. Thinking that it was one of the children playing pranks, they were determined to discover who the culprit was and sprinkled flour on the floor. However, there were no footprints.

One afternoon, Nurse Evans was conducting her routine visits to the patients when she heard heavy steps coming from the stairs. A heavy door was heard to have it's bolts drawn back and opened. She rushed into the stairwell to find the door wide open. The footsteps were heard walking away again.

Strange Ghostly winds and breathing are heard during night duty in these stories of the Ghostly Goings On in the Wards. Stories of doors continually banging in the hospital by an Unseen Ghostly Presence.

At night during winter 1973, one of the children was sleeping when he felt the bed lift up. He awoke and shouted for the Nurse on duty. They thought that somebody had hidden under the bed and moving it, but when they checked, there was nobody there. Another night shortly after, another bed was violently shaken and the curtains suddenly hoisted up then let down again several times. They removed the curtains, but the experience that followed was more terrifying. The children were laying awake half-expecting something to happen, when a misty, bluish figure of a man drifted out of the wall and leant over one of them in an almost horizontal position. Many of the children saw the figure quite clearly and lay in their beds, speechless with terror, as it retreated and passed back into the wall. The children would not sleep in the room again and the ward had to be closed off.

During the early 1980's a nurse, on night duties, was making her rounds on one of the children's wards. Carrying out her routine checks on whether the children were sleeping soundly she came across a young girl who was sitting upright, wide-awake. Asking her what was wrong the young girl told her that she had woken up to find an old man at the end of her bed staring at her. He smiled and then walked out of the ward. The nurse, fearing that there was an intruder on the premises asked the girl which direction the man went. She pointed out that he went into the bathing rooms.

The nurse walked over to the bathing rooms and peered into the room and although it didn't look like there was anyone in there she proceeded to enter the room. Once in the room she heard a faint groan coming from one of the bathing cubicles. She called out saying that anyone that was in the room should be aware that she has called the police. With no answer returned from the intruder the nurse walked over to the cubicle from where the groan came from and pulled back the curtain to find no one there. Thinking that she could have misheard where the groan came from the nurse called out again. The groan, this time louder seemed to emit from the very same cubicle the nurse was currently investigating. In fear the nurse fled the room and the hospital; she refused to ever return and work on that same ward again.

In many cases, human psychology plays a major role in ghost sightings. In chilling situations where ghosts are associated with a natural animal response may make the hair rise which could be mistaken for a chill. Illusions can be created by one by seeing an eerie figure. According to a poll conducted in 2005 by the Gallup Organization, about 32% of Americans believe in the existence of ghosts. Such a definition always makes it difficult to explain about the ghosts that tend to answer questions and those which foretell the future etc. Ghosts are often associated with haunting, which is, according to the Parapsychological Association, "the more or less regular occurrence of paranormal phenomena associated with a particular locality (especially a building) and usually attributed to the activities of a discarnate entity; the phenomena may include apparitions, poltergeist disturbances, cold drafts, sounds of steps and voices, and various odours. This definition is used commonly among all! There have been several doubts regarding the existence of the ghost and disputes too whether ghosts are just imaginations or part of objective existence.
